What Sailing means to World Championship Gold Medallist - Niki Birrell

Sailing is a wonderful sport and has added to my life hugely. You meet great friends, there are great socials and it helps keep the mind and body active as there is always something that you can improve on, no matter how good you think you are. One of the greatest things about the sport is the amount of variables involved which means that every day you experience different challenges and no two days are the same. For me that keeps the sport interesting the whole time.

Sailing has been very key to my life so far and I have met lots of friends, some who I would hope will be friends for life. I have had a lot of fun at a variety of sailing events in various classes and the sport has given me the opportunity to travel all over the World. The best bit for me is the competing, I love to try and do betterand to win!!!

Alex and I have just won the SKUD 18 World Championships in Greece which was an amazing result and a lot of fun. That feeling of winning is just great and it is what motivates me to learn more and sail more often to practice my skills.

However that does not mean you have to win a World Championship to enjoy competing, as a kid I used to love practising and improving slowly along the way. I guess the most excited I have ever been was winning a club race for the 1st time with my brother, that was an amazing experience I will never forget. What I am trying to say is that sailing and competing at all levels is fun and you can use the sport to improve other areas of your life in many ways.

What ever disability you have there is always a role on a sailing boat that you can fullfil and add something to the team in order to help make that boat win.

If you are not a competitive person, sailing is still a great sport and just going out for a sail can be very fun and rewarding. When I sail all other the things in your life become unimportant as you get wrapped up in sailing the boat.

For Alex and I it has brought many opportunities, we get to see the World (or different boat parks anyway) and have had the chance to compete at a Paralympic Games -  being part of a team is very rewarding in itself. Even after the sailing, it is always very nice to chat to other people in the bar and around the boat park that have similar interests to you.

Go and try sailing you will love it but be warned it is addictive!!!
